What a topic! Many years ago I would listen to Louise Hay's book "You Can Heal Your Life" during my commute. One of the many things that has stuck in my mind from Louise's teachings is people find it easier to talk about sex than they do about money. And even though I agree with Louise, I think Forgiveness is even a tougher topic than sex or money!
Most of us do not seem to have a problem with recognizing that we are imperfect beings living in an imperfect world. Yet, we have a hard time with forgiveness. Forgiving ourselves and forgiving others. Maybe because we have high expectations of ourselves and others. Maybe we are perfectionists, maybe we are control freaks. It doesn't matter why, it only matters that we learn to truly forgive. And that forgiveness always needs to start with ourselves.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to have many wise and wonderful spiritual teachers in my life. One of my teachers taught me to use discernment in who I allow into my circle of embrace. This was an eye-opener for me, as I realized I could love some folks from afar. So over the years as I have come to learn forgiveness, I have also learned who may be in my circle of love, but not in my circle of embrace.
Another teacher introduced me to Ho'oponopono, the Hawaiian Forgiveness Practice. Adding this somewhere in your day can be very powerful.
Start or end your day with these short sayings. Say them for yourself and for others you may have hurt:
